About Us

President's Message

Welcome to the Cobble Hill Farmers Institute website. We invite you to explore our website to get a sense of who we are and what we value as part of the South Cowichan community.

As you browse through our website you will see we host many events and support several groups that help to make our community such a great place to live.

We are all facing challenges in the coming year and perhaps beyond, due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Farmers Institute is also challenged as an organization and we are working on new ways to conduct business until we can return to some form of safeness and normalcy.

Before getting into the future, I would like to take a moment to thank all the volunteers and helpers over the past year that have contributed to the success of our Society and to the community as a whole. I am most grateful to those who helped support the numerous Cobble Hill events, groups and activities. It was truly a banner year. As we move into the future and its challenges we will be considering how we can continue to support the various organizations we have worked with including 4-H Clubs and South Cowichan Seniors. Sadly, events like Seedy Saturday, the Easter Egg Hunt, the Halloween Bonfire, and even the Cobble Hill Fair and Remembrance Day Services will be either put on hold or transformed until we can ensure our community’s safety in holding these events. Until we are given clearance from our medical authorities, our facilities will continue to be closed to the numerous groups like TOPS, Stepping Stones, Rotary and others that use our space.

We are exploring and moving ahead on a unique approach for this year’s Fair. We are working on holding a “Virtual” Cobble Hill Fair along with an outdoor concert and Show & Shine. The Virtual Fair will involve people entering various classifications by presenting pictures of their products, whether it’s a quilt, baking, a sheep or a cabbage. These will be posted and judged within those classifications as part of the overall fair. This will all be put up on our website for display. We are already working on the details of how this will be done. Information on this unique approach and how to take part will be posted widely on electronic media. We are very proud of our Fair as this would be our 112th event. We hope this will be a good way to keep the Fair very much alive and happening. Certainly, as we look back, years from now we will be proud of the notion that we kept going even under such unusual circumstances.

The outdoor concert and Show & Shine will be held on Saturday, August 28th the same day as our traditional Fair. The day is free and those interested in enjoying South Cowichan Rotary's World Famous Pancake Breakfast should be on the site (3550 Watson Avenue) around 9 a.m.  The concert and Show & Shine will start at 10 a.m. and run through until 4 p.m.

Our Farmers Institute has served Cobble Hill and the South Cowichan community for more than a century. All of the work we do is for the community. We have no employees... we are a volunteer organization and we welcome your help and support.

For the foreseeable future, our general meetings will start again in September of 2021. In the meantime, The Board conducted the business of the Society using the Zoom platform. If you have any questions or information to contribute please get in touch.

Thank you,
Roger Painter, President
